I’m an animal person. I like dogs, cats, birds, horses, etc. But I really love beagles. I have yet to meet a beagle that I didn’t just love. Why do I love beagles? To me they’re the perfect dog.
They have a compact size that is easy to take care. Yes, they have a big bark. I consider this a plus. The comments I get from those who can hear by beagle but not see her makes me smile. They’re always surprised by her size. They’re amazed that such a small dog can make such a loud noice. Some may consider this a drawback but I consider it an advantage. It makes them a great early warning system for visitors – both welcomed and unwelcomed.
They have a great temperament. They love people and are naturally drawn to them. There’s no fear that they will turn on a child and attack. A child would have to attack the dog first. They’re also cuddle buddies. They love to cuddle up with you and are so soft. Particularly their ears. There is nothing like the velvet touch of a beagle’s ears. They will still your bed if you’re not careful.
Now for the drawbacks to having a beagle. They shed. You need to keep them brushed and well groomed to minimize the shedding. Some say they have a distinct “dog” smell to them but I personally have not noticed this. It goes back to keeping them groomed. Why you do have to keep them groomed, you will never have to cut their hair.
They do require exercise so they’ll help keep you in shape by walking them regularly. Think of them as your personal trainer. They love food and could be more aptly called chow hounds. You’ll have to keep food away from them as they will help themselves if you leave anything out. They’ll assume you left it for them. But this helps you keep your house clean so it’s actually a positive.
Overall, beagles are great dogs. That’s why I love beagles.
